Acquisitions, Mergers & DisposalsThe law and practice relating to the transfer of ownership of business enterprises, and the associated financial transactions.
 
Administrative & Constitutional LawAdministrative law regulates the activities of central and local government, which may be reviewed by high court judges (referred to as judicial review). Although we have no written constitution we do have a substantial body of constitutional law, covering our system of government and the functions of governmental institutions.
 
AdmiraltyThe law pertaining to the sea, covering for example the arrest and sale of ships.
 
AdoptionThe legal process by which a person takes a child of which they are not the biological parent as their own.
 
AdvertisingThe laws relating to advertising, whether in publications, on billboards, by direct mail or by broadcasting on television or radio.
 
AfricaLaw and practice in African countries.
 
Agency Work UndertakenLaw firms often perform legal work on behalf of other solicitors. This situation arises when a client requires legal help a long way from his or her home.
 
Agricultural LawThe umbrella term for laws that are particularly relevant to people who work in agriculture.
 
Agricultural PropertyThis deals with agricultural land, agricultural holdings and agricultural buildings.
 
Agro-Food LawLaws pertaining to the agricultural aspects of food production, such as animal rearing and crop growing.
 
AirportsLaws which are relevant to the running and organisation of airports.
 
Ancillary ReliefDomestic or matrimonial proceedings in which orders for the payment of maintenance or adjustment of property rights are ancillary to the main subject of the proceedings (for example, a divorce).
 
Anti-DumpingA branch of trade law that enables action to be taken against goods being exported at unfairly low prices.
 
Anti-TrustLegislation on the protection of competition and fair markets. The equivalent in the USA of competition law.
 
Arbitration/Mediation/ADRMethods of settling disputes without going to court. In arbitration, an arbitrator or panel of arbitrators hears evidence from both sides in proceedings which may be as formal as a court case, but may be quite informal and sometimes cheaper than court proceedings. Mediation involves the parties reaching agreement through negotiation through a mediator. The court system increasingly offers these alternatives to litigation, especially in family matters and small claims.
 
Architects and SurveyorsThe law relating to architects and surveyors, including contract law, building regulations and copyright.
 
Asian-PacificThe law and practice of the countries of the Asian-Pacific region.
 
Assets & Asset RecoveryProtection of assets, usually those of a business, and their recovery from persons who have them wrongly in their possession.
 
AviationThe law relating to the ownership and operation of aircraft. This includes such diverse subjects as aircraft finance and the prosecution of passengers who behave in a criminal manner aboard an aircraft.
